Start with the actual symptom
Common reasons a faucet continues to drip after it is shut off.
The most useful next step is to separate what you can observe from what still needs to be diagnosed. Note which fixtures are affected, when the problem started, whether it is getting worse, and whether water is actively leaking or backing up.
The faucet design matters
Compression, cartridge, ceramic-disc and ball-type faucets use different internal parts.
Identifying the make and design helps avoid replacing unrelated components.
Hot side, cold side or both
Notice whether the drip changes when each handle is operated. On some fixtures this helps narrow the failed component.
Do not force handles tighter; that can damage parts without stopping the leak.
Mineral buildup and wear
Deposits can affect sealing surfaces and moving parts over time. Worn cartridges and seals are also common service items.
Cleaning or replacing the correct part is usually more effective than overtightening.
When a larger issue is possible
Water leaking below the sink, around supply connections or from the faucet body is different from a drip at the spout.
Inspect the whole fixture area before assuming the cartridge is the only problem.

For larger repairs, ask whether a focused repair, broader replacement or another method is technically reasonable and how the tradeoffs differ.
